The Bernese Mountain Dog ancestors were Mastiffs brought to Switzerland by Roman invaders over 2,000 years ago. This dog needs space and daily exercise. One of the Bernese Mountain Dog’s greatest attributes is his desire to please combined with a gentle, affectionate personality. The Bernese Mountain Dog is the only one of the four varieties of Swiss Mountain dogs to have long hair.
