The Rat Terrier truly is an American dog, originating from a mixture of various terriers, Greyhounds, Whippets and whatever worked for the immigrants to get the ‘best varmint catcher’. During the early 20th century, a Rat Terrier was a very common farm dog, and was named by President Teddy Roosevelt due to the incredible job his own Rat Terriers were doing around the White House. The Rat Terrier is extremely fond of human companionship, adaptable, healthy and long-lived. Being intelligent, agile and eager to please, they excel in obedience trials.
